It's a chilly, rainy winter weekend here in my neck of the woods. It makes me want to snuggle up on the couch with a warm beverage and a good book or movie. This recipe for homemade hot cocoa will be a great choice for that warm beverage! You can add any number of toppings or mix-ins to this recipe. I like to throw in a peppermint stick and add a little whipped cream.
Ingredients: unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar, salt, boiling water, milk, vanilla extract, half-and-half
Step 1: Combine the cocoa, sugar, and pinch of salt in a sauce pan and blend in the boiling water. Bring this mixture to an easy boil while you stir. Step 2: Simmer and stir for about two minutes, making sure that it doesn't scorch. Step 3: Stir in milk and heat until very hot but not boiling. Step 4: Remove from heat and add vanilla. Step 5: Divide between mugs and add half-and-half to cool it to drinking temperature. Add toppings or mix-ins as desired.
